Student - Centered Modeling Strategies

A few of the High School Science Teachers have attended Modeling Instruction professional development which incorporates strategies that empower students to create models that illustrates their understanding of scientific concepts. We propose for this year’s professional development to have the teachers using modeling instruction to share their strategies with the entire department, and all grade levels / disciplines will develop a lesson plan based on student -center modeling instruction. This process gives students the opportunity to practice how to approach scientific problems and model their grasp of the material to their peers. This strategy empowers student learning by giving the students more responsibility for their learning and giving all learning styles the freedom to express their understanding in their own way.

Below is the proposed schedule of our work:

December 7th - Sharing what is Student - Centered Modeling Instruction is and its pros and cons to job-a-like
January 11th - Working in grade levels/disciplines groups to develop lesson plan
February 8th - Finishing lessons plans within grade levels/disciplines groups
April 6 th -Each teachers group would Model their lesson plan to the job-a-like
